At the hotel there were dirty, unmade beds with springs sticking out, mould on the walls, torrents of water from a blocked gutter pouring down the walls and a waitress who didn't know a fork from a spoon. When rooms were double-booked, guests were put in the hotelier's wife's bedroom. But none of that mattered, because the hotelier made up his own ratings and insisted that guests settled their bills in advance.
