The daughter of a coal-miner, Doris Payne wanted to be a dancer, but was told black girls could not become ballerinas. Her criminal record goes back to 1952 and she is back in jail after stealing a $22,500 diamond and white gold ring. It took 24 hours for the jeweller to realise that the polite and elegant lady, now 83 years old, was the culprit.
