"I've failed my life and everyone in it," an unemployed man texted his friend, claiming to be suicidal. Two weeks later, he stabbed to death an antiquarian book dealer, while posing as a customer, and stole a rare copy of the Wind in the Willows, which he sold online. When arrested he was found to have a list of other possible targets, including a supermodel, an author and a venture capitalist.
